Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS) is a Montessori-based faith formation program rooted in the belief that each child, already in relationship with God, is drawn to enter into the mystery of the sacred through contemplation and discovery. At Gesu, CGS has been chosen for sacramental preparation because it honors and nurtures that spiritual relationship.
Gesu’s Atrium—the very first established in Michigan—offers all three levels of CGS, providing a rich environment where children grow in faith through prayer, reflection, and hands-on materials. The program is a collaborative effort among parents (the child’s first and most important teachers), trained catechists, and the wider Gesu faith community. Together, we guide children in deepening their understanding of the sacraments and in learning how to live the Gospel in simple, concrete ways.
Each level of CGS is tailored to the developmental and spiritual needs of the child:
• Level I (ages 3–6) focuses on the image of the Good Shepherd, helping children know they are called by name, loved, and cared for.
• Level II (ages 6–9) centers on the True Vine, emphasizing community, connection, and Jesus’ invitation to remain in Him.
• Level III (ages 9–12) explores each child’s role in God’s plan for Creation, encouraging deeper theological reflection and moral responsibility.
Sessions are held weekly from mid-September to May:
• Sunday mornings: 9:00–10:20 AM
• Wednesday evenings: 4:30–6:00 PM
