Fr. McClain is a native Detroiter and grew up in Gesu Parish just as his father did.  They attended Gesu School from Kindergarten on, and then attended U of D High School.  After high school, Fr. McClain entered the Society of Jesus at Colombiere College in Clarkston.  He did undergraduate studies at the University of Detroit, and graduate studies (M.A.) in German at University of California (Berkeley), and received a Master of Divinity from the Jesuit School of Theology at Berkeley.

His missions have included teaching foreign language and theology at St. John’s/Toledo, Walsh Jesuit/Akron, and UD Jesuit.  He also served as administrator:  Director of Campus Ministry at UD Jesuit, Principal at St. John’s Toledo, and President of Regis High School in New York  City.  In addition he was the Provincial’s Assistant for Secondary Education as well as Province Treasurer and appointed the religious superior of the Jesuit Communities in Berkley Michigan, Detroit, and Akron.

He was the first Jesuit pastor of St. Mary’s Student Parish in Ann Arbor when the Society was invited to care for that parish in 2005.  Then he was appointed the General Treasurer of the Society of Jesus and moved to Rome in that capacity for thirteen years.  He returned to Detroit and has been superior of the Detroit Jesuit Community, interim President of Loyola High School (and now part-time as President Emeritus there), and, in 2026, part-time Associate Pastor at Gesu–finally “returning home!”

To those who are familiar with Where’s Waldo?–reading the above might lead you to ask similarly:  “Where’s McClain?”  He has found the many different missions true blessings, surprised at how “the act” plays in so many different places! God has blessed all of them.
